What “Too Sweet” means

The song is mainly about two people with very different ways of living, and the narrator’s affectionate but firm refusal to be reshaped by the other person’s more disciplined, wholesome, or idealized style. Too Sweet was first released in 2024 on the EP Unheard, later folded into the Unreal Unearth: Unheard collection. It is a leftover from the Unreal Unearth sessions rather than a track on the 2023 album itself, and it became one of the project’s breakout songs. Hozier has said he recorded it during the Unreal Unearth period and initially expected it to stay unreleased. Apple Music and his official materials place it among songs rescued from the album sessions, while the official lyric video and later official video distinguish the song from the original studio recording. That matters because the recording belongs to the post album rollout, not the 2023 album proper, and its success came from a later EP release rather than the album release date.
